Discussion:
House Redoran quests dead end?

Hello,

I've encountered what seems to be a bug / problem with the "Shut down
the Caldera ebony mines" Redoran quest. I've just returned from finding
out that a certain councillor's high school sweetheart wants nothing to
do with him, and apparently (according to my journal), I've told him
that she's dead. Anyway, now I've been told that I will only get the
support of Councillor Garisa Llethri if I can find a way to shut down
the ebony mines. This is okay with me, but I've previously (as in
months ago) freed the slave Dahleena, and now it hasn't updated my
journal with any new entry re: shutting the mines down. Have I
completely @#(*&)$(@* my chances of advancing any further in House
Redoran? Any way to rectify this situation? Is it too late to tell
house Redoran to stick it somewhere unpleasant and join Hlaalu or Telvanni?

I'm totally screwed, huh?

TIA,
joe.

Nope. This quest can be solved two different ways. Freeing the slaves is
one of them. If you ask around in Caldera and inside the mines, you get
hints pointing to the other approach. It's a bit less obvious than
freeing the slaves, but I suppose you will get the clue. Don't want to
spoil it for you now. :*)

Thanks for the reply. I thought that might be the case, but the secret
ledger that I assume you're talking about (I've *acquired* that as well)
doesn't seem to interest Garisa Llethri (no dialog option), and I
can't think who else to show it to. Any hints?

btw, thanks for the "no spoiler" version. good thinking, 99.

Cheers,
joe.

You may have to take some direct action at the Hlaalu mine.

Bump off a couple of Hlaalu bosses that own/control the mines.

No, I didn't mean the ledger, that's the first quest if I remember right
(been a bit I played the Redoran).

First the councelor asks you to find evidence for corruption but do no
action. That's getting the ledger. After that is done, he asks to
shutdown the mine. This is solved by a) freeing the slaves, or b) another.

Hint, still no-spoiler version: Go to the mines and ask the non-slave
miners (errm, slaves are gone anyways) about "Shutting down mining"
topic (or similar). Make sure they like you, otherwise they won't spit
out the real information.

If I remember right, but not sure on this, Garisa Llethri gives a hint
about the alternative approach when he gives you the quest. Not sure if
this is mentioned in the journal, though. But when I played this quest,
I took the second approach following the hints Llethri gave me when I
got the quest. I also had freed the slaves earlier.

Well, I hate being on the receiving end of spoilers, too.

Well, I've gone back to the mine, and killed the 'boss' I think - the first
guy downstairs in the office (legally, mind you). I've also freed all the
slaves in the mine, so the only ones left in there are the (I think 3)
workers and the 2 guards. The only 2 people left otherwise in the whole
mining compound are the Altmer man and Bosmer woman upstairs.
Still no journal entries - Garisa Llethri still has the same dialog options.
I think this quest is buggered. Is there any other way in which to advance
in H.Redoran? Or is this a mandatory quest for such?
Help please, and thanks for the input so far...

Cheers,
-joe.

I had the same result. It was about at that point I went and bought
Tribunal. I've had the same journal entry for over a year now.Closer to two.
Not been able to change it, so maybe I did a boo-boo. There are less than 10
quests undone, and I still haven't figured out how to install a mod. In a
way, the philosophy of this game, although it allows me to play
indefinitely, becomes more limiting. So what do you do with the game after
almost all the quests and adventures are done? Well, one thing: you can go
back and collect all the stuff you missed. Another would be to decipher the
languages. There is a quest in the guidebook about a certain three books and
ONLY three. Very hard to find them. I have two.
I wound up killing all except two NPC's and the quest has been hanging
ever since. It's in the journal as uncompleted. Good game, no?

The 2 workers are the ones you should be talking to. I think that the
Orc upstairs in Caldera governor's hall might also be able to help you.

The person you need to ask them about is _not_ in the mining compound.
Read your journal entries about the Caldera Mining operation. Who does
it say is in charge of things?

Have talked to the workers - their responses are all identical to the
'halt the mining' topic. Something like, "Well, I guess if the boss
wasn't around to tell us what to do..."

I didn't know the Orc was involved, I'll try him too - thanks.

Well, that's the thing: I've only got one entry pertaining to the mines
at all... the one that says something to the effect of, 'I've freed the
slave Dahleena(sp?), so the mines will be shut down for at least a few
days'. This entry was months ago. That's the main thing making me
think something's messed up here - when the Redoran Council member first
asked me to shut the mines down, (only a few days ago) it didn't add a
journal entry.

Weird...

Muchos gracias,

There seem to be 3 ways to resolve this quest, 2 of which are denied to
you (Killing or freeing Dahleena). I expected there would also be
another peaceful way, but I can't find any in the scripts.

Actually he doesn;'t seem to be involved in this - though he does know
about someone else's ebony smuggling.

There are 2 bosses who need to die to solve this the third way. I'll
leave plenty of spoiler space.

Stlennius Vibato at the mine and Odral Helvi at the Governors Hall.

With spoilers now, I suppose you are fed up with this quest meanwhile. :)

On the topic "halt the mining", the miners say at mediocre disposition:
"Well, I guess if the boss weren't here to tell us what to do..."

This isn't too helpful, indeed. But at higher disposition (> 75) they
say: "We couldn't keep the slaves in line without Dahleena's help. And
Odral Helvi and Stlennius Vibato are the ones who really know the
business side of things."
That's a pretty clear and straightforward statement. One is in the
mining office, the other upstairs in the Caldera government hall.

As conclusion, to solve this quest:
* Free the slaves or
* Kill the two mentioned bosses or
* Kill the slaves

The choice is a matter of taste. :*)

I suppose the main problem here is getting stuck when the miners
disposition isn't high enough. But it's not the only quest that demands
people liking you before they spit out the required informations.

That's exactly what happened to my game. Well, here's a way to end this
annoying problem once and for all. Open the Console and enter
journal HR_CalderaDisrupt 100
That will get the quest out of your Journal and should be sufficient to
become Redoran's Grandmaster.
You might consider that a cheat, but if the game fails to recognize that
the one slave that kept the mine running has been gone for months, it is
definitely asking for a cheat.

Hope this helps

Alrighty.

Thanks all for your help. It was that second boss (in the Governor's
Hall - D'oh!) that was doing it... anyway, it's all sorted now, and
construction has begun on my stronghold. Just a couple more details to
iron out, and I'll be set.

Thanks again.

Cheers,
