Discussion:
(MW)Umbra does not trap souls

Hi,

I finally got Umbra but it doesnot trap souls.

I carry soul gems, it's fully charged and I can kill the creatures in
the required time. Do I need a certain amount of makiga or a certain
level in an attribute? Tribunal and Bloodmoon are installed and in
that order.

Second question. I got 3 Ascentant Sleepers into 3 grand soul gems but
these 3 filled grand soul gems disappeared from my inventory. Any
explanation?

TIA

I have no explanation for why Umbra is not trapping souls for you.
Usually (but not always), when you have a soul trap active on an
animal, the creature glows with a little white misty cloud and has
white sparkeles. Does this occur? Also, high level souls (people,
vampires) cannot be soul trapped. And, you must have a gem large
enough to trap the creature you are trying for. Vivec, for example,
will fit in Azura's Star, but not a grand soul gem. Some creatures--
like Golden Saints--will try to dispel the soul trap.

As for the missing gems, do you see your other soul gems. You can
have your inventory set to show only some types of objects, but not
all objects.

Umbra is cast when used. You have to equip it as both your weapon and your
magic item. Then you use r to cast soul trap.

FYI Soul Drinker is cast when strikes. You get it as a reward for a Mages
guild quest. When enchanting your own weapons, it is usually a good idea to
use cast when strikes. I found this out when I first tried to enchant
something. I had the same experience you had with Umbra, when I tried to
use my weapon.

Getting the killing blow with Soul Drinker's fun if you already have
Soul Tap cast on the monster - fills 2 soul gems. :) [which is why my
Khajjit has 6 Golden Saint souls at the moment (from 3 GS scrolls)]

Slight correction. They take away anything you've every stolen *any*
of. If you've never stolen that type of soul gem, they won't take it
as far as I know.

I stole a grand soul gem for the enchantress in Balmora when helping
Ajiira. Now when I try to use any grand soul gem to enchant an object
there, the moment I hit Buy they start to scream that I'm a thief even
when the stolen grand soul gem has been up at Ald Ruhn(???).

Yeah. To be a successful thief you have to pretty much quicksave before
each transaction since shopkeepers/enchanters always think that it's the
same item you stole from them, even if that particular copy of what you
stole was long ago used up or sold elsewhere. Basically, doing that
quest for the Mages' Guild screws you over for enchanting at the Balmora
guild house... :(

[sad that this happens, really, since it wouldn't've been at all hard to
have 2 fields set when an item's stolen (a binary toggle for stolen
status and, if that bit's set, the ID of the shopkeeper you stole it
from) and to have it stack separately from others of its kind; on a
related note, it also wouldn't've been hard for them to have soul gems
of the same type (common, grand, etc.) and soul filling stack, either)]

No, it doesn't - the only item you're asked to take has no ownership
and can never cause any problems. It's not really a soulgem either, in
fact it's a miscellaneous object with a soulgem icon, so even if it
had ownership it wouldn't cause other gems to be confiscated. If you
take any of the normal soulgems in the same area, _then_ you can get
into trouble.

Yeah. The soul gem you stole is marked as belonging, not to a person,
but to a *faction* (the Mages Guild), so stealing any of the filled
soul gems there will mark ALL grand soul gems as "stolen, owned by the
Mages Guild", so if you ever try to buy enchantment from a Mages Guild
mage using that kind of soul gem, you're hosed.

And you didn't even need to steal it. In fact you weren't supposed to
steal any soul gems: but PUT a fake one in the chest.

Ah well. You've got an alternative option: find a professional
enchanter who does not belong to the Mages Guild. There is a large
faction of magic users who do not belong to the Guild, and are opposed
to them...

I just go to another Mage Guild enchantress in another city

In one of my early Morrowind games I clobbered one character since he
was intended to be a thief who dabbled in alchemy. Now one of the
early Thieves' Guild quests involves stealing a diamond and some of
the more interesting potions a master alchemist can make involve
diamonds so you can quickly see why stealing a diamond when you're
level 1 can make your career as an alchemist "interesting" when you're
level 25!

I usually steal all of Galbedir's soul gems and the limeware platter! A good
source of cash when you're starting out. I just never do any enchanting at
the Balmora Mages Guild.

Fortunately there are several easy ways to get a "free" diamond, so
you don't have to actually steal one...

Also, a potion made from a stolen ingredient isn't marked as stolen,
as far as I know.

You can find out what "stolen" items you have by opening up the console
by pressing the ~ key and type in TFH, you can then look in your
inventory and see what items have owners. this will also tell you what
items you're about to take have owners too. Containers can also have
owners, so anything taken or put in become the property of their
respective owner.

It's kinda sad that you can't take over a house by killing the owner
(justly or unjust) and yet you can't use any of the containers because
they are still marked as belonging to the dead owner.

It also annoys me that the loot in some necromancer hideouts have
owners too.

you pretty much never want to get arrested, you will lose any items that
have owners.

Hi,
I finally got Umbra but it doesnot trap souls.
I carry soul gems, it's fully charged and I can kill the creatures in
the required time. Do I need a certain amount of makiga or a certain
level in an attribute? Tribunal and Bloodmoon are installed and in
that order.
Second question. I got 3 Ascentant Sleepers into 3 grand soul gems but
these 3 filled grand soul gems disappeared from my inventory. Any
explanation?
TIA

This is a possibilty Ellen since I have been bad several times.
I'll watch out for this in the future, good advice.

Thanks for the suggestion, that got me going on the right track. I had
played the game some years ago and mistakenly remembered it to be much
easier to trap souls.
Thanks

DeAnn:
After using Ellen's suggestion I am seeing the white cloud most of the
time however, I fear the trapped soul gems are lost for some reason.
I'm finding so many grand soul gems now( luck=71) that I should be
able to replace them.
Thanks

The likelihood is that the "missing" soul gems were confiscated by the
guards because they believed them stolen. They're most likely in a
Chest Marked 'Evidence' in one of the Imperial Legion's prison towers.

Go check out the Evidence Chests at the forts. You will find your
missing items there if the guards took them. You have to be a decent
theif to get them back, however, as there is usually a guard nearby to
spot you.
